Planets in Astrology
Revised . First published .
When you check the planets in astrology, you'll see 10 sky bodies mapped at exact degrees like 14°23′ Taurus. We include the Sun and Moon in that count. Each body moves at its own speed and shows a different part of how astrologers read your chart.
The personal planets range from the Sun to Mars
Your chart's 5 fastest bodies are the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. These bodies move quickly through the zodiac. Their positions shift daily, and the Moon travels a noticeable distance between 9:00 (AM) and 9:00 (PM). Astrologers see these 5 placements as your immediate reactions, daily habits and core traits.
By tradition, the Sun represents your main drive and sense of purpose, astrologers say. The Moon shows what you need emotionally and what helps you feel safe. Mercury reflects how you talk, listen and make sense of daily facts. Venus shows how you handle both affection and value. Mars shows how you act, express anger and pursue what you want.
What roles do the social planets Jupiter and Saturn play?
Jupiter and Saturn sit between fast inner bodies and slow outer bodies. Astrologers call these bodies social planets. They connect your private habits to the wider community. There, you work and take on duties. Jupiter circles the zodiac in about 12 years and spends 1 year in each sign. Saturn needs 29.5 years for an orbit and remains in one sign for 2.5 years.
Traditional readings treat Jupiter and Saturn as opposing forces. They balance the urge you have to grow against your practical limits. Astrologers see Jupiter as marking the chart area where you search for confidence, generosity and meaning. Saturn represents your sense of duty and patience. It identifies where you make steady effort and establish lasting structure.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto: outer planets
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto travel so far from the Sun that you need a telescope to see them. Their movement is very slow. Uranus completes 1 orbit in 84 years, compared with 165 years for Neptune and 248 years for Pluto. Their 7 to 30 years in 1 sign mean everyone born in your decade has the same sign placements.
We check the house occupied by an outer planet when we read your chart. We also check for any tight angles formed with your personal planets. Astrologers link Uranus to sudden change, to independence and to breaks from routine. Astrologers read Neptune as imagination, ideals and unclear boundaries. Deep pressure, power struggles and major overhauls have a link to Pluto.
Why does your chart include Chiron, Lilith and the lunar nodes?
Smaller bodies and calculated points appear beside the 10 main planets on many birth charts. Neither the North Node nor the South Node is a physical object. The Moon's orbit and the Sun's path cross at 2 mathematical points, and their angular separation is 180°00′. In astrologers' readings, the South Node stands for familiar habits, while the North Node shows new skills you're learning.
Between Saturn and Uranus orbits the small icy body Chiron. A full trip around the zodiac takes it about 50 years. For astrologers, Chiron marks a tender spot. You feel out of place there, yet still give others good advice. Black Moon Lilith marks the empty point on the Moon's orbit that lies farthest from Earth, and astrologers read it as raw independence.

People's questions
Why is Earth missing from the planets shown in my birth chart?
Your birth chart shows the sky from the precise Earth location of your birth. The solar system is viewed from ground level. Our planet therefore sits at the wheel's center rather than in the zodiac ring around it. Every other body's position is measured by its angle from your birthplace.
What is meant by the retrograde symbol beside a planet?
The letter R or an Rx symbol shows that the planet was in retrograde motion at your birth. Because our orbits travel at different speeds, a planet can appear to move backward from Earth. Neither the Sun nor the Moon ever turns retrograde. Astrologers view retrograde placements as more inward and deliberate.
How do classical planet rulers differ from modern ones?
In the time before telescopes, astrologers used the 7 visible bodies as rulers of the 12 zodiac signs. Leo had the Sun as its ruler, while Cancer had the Moon. Each of the other 5 planets ruled 2 signs. Uranus was found by astronomers in 1781, Neptune in 1846, and Pluto was found in 1930; modern astrologers then assigned them Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio.
Is an exact birth time necessary to locate all my planets?
Almost every planet's sign can be found using only your birth date. An exception occurs only if some planet changed signs on that day. The Moon is where your birth time matters most. It travels roughly 12°00′ to 15°00′ each day. A clock time is also needed to calculate your Rising sign and 12 houses.
