Chiron in Astrology
Revised . First published .
Astrologers read Chiron in astrology as an old wound and your gift for healing it. This small body stays in 1 sign from 2 to 8 years. We look at its place on your chart to see how your hardest lessons help others.

In a birth chart, what does Chiron rule?
Chiron isn't an official ruler of any zodiac sign, unlike the main planets. Some modern astrologers associate it with Virgo because each focuses on practical healing and service. Others connect it with Sagittarius, the archer, because, in Greek myth, Chiron was a wise teacher. When reading your chart, though, we don't treat it as a sign ruler.
Instead, astrologers say the tender spot that never fully goes away in your life is ruled by Chiron. You could spend years trying to fix that problem for yourself without fully succeeding. Even so, you'll notice that you give clear, steady help to friends who face the exact same trouble. It marks where personal pain grows into patient wisdom and sound advice.
Reading Chiron through its zodiac sign
Chiron follows a stretched oval course, so its speed through the signs varies greatly. It stays in Aries for about 8 years, but it passes through Libra in less than 2 years. Because it moves so slowly, many people born near your birth year have the same Chiron sign. The sign shows the style of an old hurt to astrologers.
Suppose your chart shows Chiron in Aries at 14°23′. You might, astrologers say, question whether you have the right to speak for yourself. Cancer links the tender spot to family roots and emotional safety. For a quick summary, you can check the element of the sign. Fire means confidence, earth means security, air means clear talk and water means trust.
How to find Chiron in your houses
On a birth chart, each of the 12 pie slices stands for 1 house. Every slice covers a daily life topic such as money, home or marriage. The right slice requires your exact birth time, which could be 8:15 AM. The sign tells you how Chiron feels, while the house tells you where you meet it in life.
Astrologers read a Chiron placement in the 1st house as shyness in new situations. Marriage and close partnerships show the sensitive theme in the 7th house. A placement in the 10th house often makes people worry about their career goals. People with that placement often become excellent career mentors for their coworkers.

How do astrologers calculate Chiron and use it?
Astronomers discovered Chiron in 1977, orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. Astronomical tracking tables let us calculate its spot, making its degree a physical fact. On January 1, 2000, at 12:00 PM, Chiron stood at 11°44′ Sagittarius. We enter your birth details, then plot the exact sky position on your chart wheel.
Each year, Chiron is retrograde for about 5 months. Retrograde means a body appears to travel backward when viewed from Earth. If it's retrograde at birth, astrologers see the hurt as private and quiet. We track it as well to age 50, when it comes back to your birth degree.

Common questions from people
Does Chiron count as an asteroid or a comet?
Astronomers list Chiron as a minor planet and also as a comet. Icy bodies found in that region are known as centaurs. Chiron is about 125 miles across and sometimes develops a faint comet tail. Its path joins old, familiar Saturn with modern Uranus, which is why astrologers use it. This connection ties your family habits to your own independent growth.
On my birth chart, why does Chiron look like a key?
The Chiron chart symbol has a small circle at the bottom. A tall stem rises above it, with 2 branches at the top. Right after the body was found, designers created that mark in 1977. The astronomer who spotted it is honored by an upper shape in the form of the letter K. Astrologers also interpret it as a key to wisdom.
Is it possible to find my Chiron sign without my birth time?
Almost always, your birth date alone is enough to find your Chiron sign. Chiron stays in 1 sign for years, so the precise hour rarely affects its sign placement. When your birthday falls on the day Chiron changed signs, choose 12:00 PM in your chart calculator. Without a birth time, you'll only miss the house number.
Is a strong Chiron placement a sign that I'll have a hard life?
No, because astrologers don't consider a strong Chiron a sign of bad luck. Every chart includes Chiron somewhere. That means every person has a tender spot. If Chiron sits near your Sun or Moon, you're likely to sense other people's feelings right away. That close pattern appears at birth for many counselors, nurses and teachers.
